Production, Post-harvest Handling, Utilization, and Marketing of Fresh Mushrooms in Ethiopia

Presently, mushroom farming is being practiced in more than 100 countries and its production is increasing at the rate of 7% per annum. Production of mushroom reaches 7 million metric tons annually in the world. The world market for the mushroom industry in 2005 was valued at over $45 billion. Mushrooms are known for their nutritional and medicinal benefits.

Despite of the current increasing interest on mushrooms and production endeavors in some parts of Ethiopia, the economic, food, and medicinal value of mushrooms have not been exploited so far. Hence, we provide this training with full production, post-harvest handling and utilization, and marketing stage to contribute our bit for the development of mushroom industry in Ethiopia.

Post-harvest Handling and Processing of Horticultural Crops

In Ethiopia the post-harvest losses of fresh fruits, vegetables, and root and tuber crops is estimated to be more than 30% of the annual production of these crops. Hence, one of the purposes of this training is to acquaint the trainees with post harvest handling and improved ways of processing fruits and vegetables at a scale that is appropriate for families and other groups of people to earn a daily income.

Clonal Propagation of Horticultural Crops and Rejuvenation of Old Unproductive Orchards

Ethiopia has a wide range of edaphic and climatic conditions that permit the production of tropical and subtropical fruit crops. Temperate crops can also be grown in the highlands. Irrigation can be provided from rivers and fresh water lakes throughout the year. In additions to the growing demand in the local market, the neighboring Arab countries and winter export to Europe are potential markets for the expansion of fruit industry in the country. Despite of these, exports of fresh produces are currently negligible due to quality and other related problems.

Thus, our objective is to provide modern knowledge and skills on the principles, practices, and practical application of vegetative propagation methods in such a way that trainees can carry out similar activities in their respective centers

Planning, Establishment, and Management of Commercial Plant Nursery Sites

To be successful in a modern nursery, you do need to be more than just ‘good with plants’ – business skills are vital and sometimes hard decisions are required, just like in all industries. However, for people who can develop the necessary production and management skills, producing plants and managing a nursery may be a more relaxed and rewarding option than managing most other types of operations.

Staff training is an ongoing and necessary aspect of any nursery. Training employees makes good sense for many reasons:

It reduces the time needed for new employees to reach acceptable levels of performance. Properly educated nursery staff has the potential to be more efficient and productive. They are often considered to be the most important asset of a nursery.

It saves money, prevents misuse of equipment and avoids wastage of materials.

It provides employees an opportunity to gain new skills. Nursery managers should consider the level of skills and training they require of their employees (and themselves). Any nursery, large or small, needs some staff with broad based training and a way of thinking that will help the employees foresee future needs and take innovative action whenever needed.

It gives new employees security, which helps in the overall development of motivation.

In view of these, our professional team organized from multidisciplinary fields of agriculture is waiting for you to offer your staff the necessary knowledge and skill in establishing and managing small and large scale nurseries. We provide the training at your workplace or at our training site.
